“Competing” is how many active listings use the tag. It is not how often buyers search for it — Etsy publishes no such figure.
The shop you already have
A shop with two hundred listings has two hundred chances to improve against one. Connect it and each listing is read: what its traffic says, which of its thirteen tags sit in races it is unlikely to win, and whether its description carries the phrases it competes for.
Etsy reads the description when it ranks a listing. Most descriptions carry none of the listing’s own tags.
A listing you have not written
Upload the photographs. The product is identified from what is actually in them, candidate tags are measured against Etsy’s live search rather than guessed at, and the title and description are written around the ones you keep.
It arrives as a draft in your shop, for you to publish or not.

Through Etsy's own authorisation screen. You choose what to grant, and you can withdraw it from your Etsy account at any time.

Rules drawn from Etsy's published guidance, and tag competition read from Etsy's own search. Every figure says where it came from.

Rewrites are proposals. Edit them, undo them, or ignore them — nothing reaches your shop until you press save.
What it will not do
These are constraints in the code rather than promises about intent.
Publish anything by itself
A new listing is created as a draft, always. Changing a listing buyers can already see is a separate step, and it is approved one listing at a time.
Reach Etsy any way but the official API
Everything comes through Etsy's API under the access you granted. Nothing is scraped, and no marketplace-wide dataset is kept.
Invent facts about your product
A material, a measurement or a claim you did not give us is a defect. The rules that check for it run on every rewrite, before you see it.
Promise a result
Nothing here estimates what you will sell. What it reports are counts of real things, and it says which are Etsy's figures and which are ours.
